Big-Batch Challah for Hafrashat Challah

A large batch for a group bake. With 2.5 kg of flour it reaches the highest flour thresholds listed on our hafrashat challah guide, so you can separate challah with a blessing under every custom. Please ask your rabbi which custom you follow. Makes about six loaves.

Ingredients

loaves
Hafrashat challah · 2,500 g flour in this batch

Customs differ. This is information, not a ruling: please ask your rabbi which custom you follow. Read the guide

    Method

    1. Combine the dry ingredients in a very large bowl or mixer. Add the wet ingredients and mix, then knead until smooth.
    2. Separate challah now (see our guide): say the blessing, take an olive-sized piece, and set it aside to be burned.
    3. Cover and let rise until doubled.
    4. Divide, braid, rest on lined trays, then egg wash.
    5. Bake at 175 C (350 F) until deep golden.
    Notes

Scale down only if each separate dough still reaches the flour amount of your custom. Ask your rabbi.
